The system, which was devised by Swedish doctors and engineers, was designed to provide protection even when the human brain is subjected to strong rotational movements in a multi-directional impact. Helmets without MIPS® technology also offer protection - but only in linear impact scenarios, i.e. when the head hits an object/ground straight on rather than at an angle - which is negligibly rare in practice.
